How do I make an appointment to view the Chinese Room?

What is the capacity of the Chinese Room?
The Chinese Room can accommodate as many as 99 people in a reception style atmosphere and can comfortably seat 70 for a dinner setting. If your event involves more than 99 persons, please consider the Stimson-Green mansion.

Is the Chinese Room wheelchair accessible?
Yes. The elevators and Chinese Room are wheelchair accessible. The outside observation deck is not.

How far in advance should I reserve the Chinese Room?
This can vary widely. You will want to make reservations well in advance especially during peak seasons. Short notice bookings are possible depending on availability. Please contact our Hospitality Director at (206) 622-3131 or fill out our information request form.

What is included in the room rental?
The room rental includes elevator operator, use of available tables and chairs, use of observation deck, dance floor, wireless internet, sound system and audio/visual equipment, and on-site security.

Is there a deposit required to reserve the room?
Yes, a non-refundable deposit of 50% of the rental fee (minimum $400) is required to reserve a date. The deposit is applied towards the total fee and the remaining balance is due no later than 45 days prior to the scheduled event.

Is there a cleaning fee?
Yes. In addition to the room rental there is a $100 cleaning fee.

What is the tax rate?
Currently the tax rate is 8.9%.

How do I get there?
The Smith Tower is located at 506 Second Avenue, in Seattle, between James and Yesler streets.   Map/Directions

What about parking?
Valet parking can be arranged. Parking is available across the street from the Smith Tower at the Butler Garage. Please call IPM at (206) 621-1227 for more information on the Butler Garage. Additionally, there are several other pay lots as well as on and off street parking within easy walking distance.

Do I have to use one of the caterers on your list or can I bring in my own food?
You must use one of our approved caterers. We have carefully selected the caterers on our list to ensure that a broad range of pricing and menu options are available. Our selected caterers are very professional, experienced and familiar with working in the unique setting of the Chinese Room.

What about alcohol?
All of our caterers allow you to bring in your own alcohol if you chose to or they can provide it for you. Groups serving alcohol are required to obtain a banquet permit from a Washington State liquor store. The permit must be posted on the day of the event in a prominent place within the Chinese Room.

Do you allow candles?
Yes. We allow votive candles or floating candles only. Candelabras, tapered candles and candles producing an open flame are not permitted.

Are there any restrictions on decorations?
We do not allow bird seed, rice, confetti, popcorn or glitter. Please do not tape or tack anything to the walls or ceiling. Fog or smoke machines are not permitted.

Is there a smoking area?
Smoking is not allowed in the Chinese Room or on the Observation Deck.
